About Us
Yachtsmiths specialises in luxury, performance and commercial marine craft surface finishing, this includes the fairing and painting of custom new build and production new build vessels, refinishing of existing vessels, both exterior and interior, and the maintenance and repair of all types of yacht coatings.

Yachtsmiths is owned and operated by Gareth Ahern and Danny McCallum, colleagues for the entirety of their careers, they share a passion for yacht finishing and a vision for the future.

History
Gareth Ahern and Danny McCallum joined the yacht finishing industry in 1998, and 2001, developing their skill base on a variety of large new build projects and a series of major refit and refinish projects carried out all over the East Coast of Australia.
In 2004 Gareth and Danny relocated to Taiwan to oversee the complete fairing and painting of the staggeringly impressive 70m M.Y Felix (ex-Amadeus) before returning to Australia in 2006 to carry out refinish works to a raft of large high profile European built vessels that were visiting Australian shores at that time.
In 2008, Gareth joined famed Sydney-based yacht builder McConaghy Boats as paint manager and subsequently transferred with that company to its Zhuhai, China plant where he managed exterior and interior fairing and finishing to many exciting projects including the radical 42m power trimaran Adastra.
Around the same time, Danny joined Auckland based yacht builder Alloy Yachts and worked through a series of new build fairing and painting projects before joining Gareth in PRC to help oversee finishing of the multi award winning 42m Adastra.
In 2013/14, Gareth and Danny relocated to Hong Kong to help set up the Asian division of a notable Australian yacht finishing orginisation. The following several years were quickly consumed carrying out aftersales and warranty works for Italian based yacht building giants, Bennetti and Ferretti as well as a host of refinish works to a variety of vessels throughout the Asia Pacific region.
Now having amassed well over 40 years of combined industry experience, Gareth and Danny have returned to Southeast Queensland with their young families to settle down and establish Yachtsmiths PTY LTD.
Experience and Education
Gareth Ahern and Danny McCallum joined the yacht finishing industry in 1998, and 2001, developing their skill base on a variety of large new build projects spread across the east coast of Australia. Having learned their craft and going from strength to strength, it wasn’t long before they found themselves overseeing a series of major refit and refinish projects carried out in Newcastle during the early 2000’s.
